Matt Jones

Jones has been out of the league since 2018. He had a strong showing in the XFL and is attempting to make a comeback. With players still opting out, it's possible Jones could find his way back on an NFL roster. 

Jones struggled to find a role with the Colts last season behind the likes of Frank Gore and Marlon Mack, suiting up for only five games after starting the season on the practice squad. The 2015 third-round pick finished the year with only five carries for 14 yards, after taking 243 carries for 950 yards and six touchdowns (while losing six fumbles) in two seasons with Washington. The Eagles quickly picked Jones up after the Colts released him May 1, but it seems like he'll be a long shot to make the 53-man roster.

The writing has been on the wall for Jones' time in Washington since he was deemed a healthy scratch from Week 8 onward last season. At the very least, the Redskins will keep Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine around to power the ground game in 2017. Now subject to waivers, Jones has averaged 3.9 YPC and hauled in 27 of 33 targets across 20 career appearances, so it shouldn't surprise if he finds a new home in the near future.

Jones' fall from Washington's starter at this time last year has been well documented, and the emergence of Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine makes him expendable. It remains to be seen whether the Redskins would cut Jones if they're unable to find a trade partner, but it appears as though the team is ready to move on from him.
