Jets signed LB/S Marcell Harris, formerly of the 49ers.

The No. 184 overall pick of the 2018 draft, Harris spent his entire rookie contract in San Francisco, a rarity for a sixth-round pick. He will be reuniting with ex-Niners DC Robert Saleh in Florham Park, though Harris saw the most playing time of his career following Saleh's departure in 2021. The soon-to-be 28-year-old made seven starts, playing 335 snaps on defense. Capable of playing both linebacker and safety, Harris figures to slot in as a core special teamer who could see some time on defense.

He was slated to be a restricted free agent. Harris has appeared in 29 games over the last two seasons and has consistently played about a third of the defensive snaps while being a mainstay on special teams.

Harris recorded 40 tackles (23 solo), five passes defended and three forced fumbles over 13 games in 2019.

Harris spent most of the season on the special teams unit, but he gave us a glimpse of what he could produce as a starter when he totaled 28 tackles, five passes defended and a forced fumble over four games filling in for Jaquiski Tartt. The 25-year-old possesses tremendous speed and hit power -- ideal qualities for a special teams player -- but he could put up useful IDP numbers when starting. Harris remains under contract for the 2020 season, where he should stick as a backup safety.

Harris is starting at strong safety Saturday against the Rams, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

The 25-year-old is making his third straight start in place of Jaquiski Tart (ribs). Harris has 12 total tackles, four passes defensed and one forced fumble in his first two starts.
