Malcom Floyd

This was a sad way end a career. Floyd had said long ago that he was retiring at the end of the year, and Sunday was to be his last game. Unfortunately, it ended with a trip to the locker room with a concussion. Floyd enjoyed a very productive career as a downfield threat for Philip Rivers. He was a strong, well-liked leadership presence in the locker room that will be missed in San Diego.

Floyd has said Sunday is his last game in the league, so it would be a bit sad if his last game were to end this way. Hopefully he can get back on the field in the second half and finish his career on the field.

If Floyd gets open for deep passes, his value skyrockets. If not, it plummets. That’s just way too much of a (very) high risk, (relatively) low reward to advocate a fantasy start for Floyd. All year Floyd has been San Diego’s main deep threat, but he hasn’t been productive at all as most of the passes have been overthrown or simply just not hauled in. With Denver on the horizon in Week 17, there’s no reason to start him.

Floyd has a lot of big play upside, but that’s about it. He is not a possession receiver by any stretch of the imagination, and is so dependent on big plays that it is impossible to advocate starting him in seasonal or daily leagues. Floyd might very well be the most talented receiver on the Chargers’ squad, but it doesn’t matter if he can’t be found on a deep ball. With Stevie Johnson expected to return next week, it will eat even more into Floyd’s targets.
