Falcons TE Lee Smith announced his retirement.
Primarily a special teams and inline blocking tight end throughout his career, Smith, 34, walks away after 149 combined appearances with the Bills, Raiders, and Falcons. He netted a career $23.6 million in earnings over 11 years in the league.
Falcons declared TE Lee Smith (back), CB Kendall Sheffield (hamstring), DE John Cominsky, G/C Josh Andrews, DL Ta'Quon Graham, and DL Jonathan Bullard inactive for Week 10 against the Cowboys.
Blocking specialist Lee has played a third of the offensive snaps this season.
Lee Smith caught 3-of-3 targets for seven yards and a touchdown in the Falcons' Week 3 win over the Giants.
Smith's TD reception was a critical score in the Falcons' Week 3 win. For fantasy purposes it was notable primarily because it was a tight end touchdown that did not go to Kyle Pitts. Smith can continue to be left on the waiver wire.
Falcons traded for TE Lee Smith in exchange for a 2022 late-round pick.
Smith is labeled as a tight end, but he's essentially a third offensive tackle when he takes the field. The 34-year-old will be Arthur Smith's run-blocking tight end while Hayden Hurst operates as the pass-catcher. Smith getting traded is a surprise, but the move does free up $2.25 million for Buffalo.
