Delano Hill
Player News
Panthers signed S Delano Hill, formerly of the Seahawks.
The Seahawks drafted Hill in the third round of the 2017 draft but he didn't start his first game until the 2018 season. After four years with the team, he had recorded 64 tackles and one pass defense. Back and hip injuries landed Hill on injured reserve in each of the past two seasons, further hampering his growth as a player. He'll be a project for the Panthers, who can afford to take some high-upside shots on defense.
Hill recorded 25 tackles over 12 regular-season games in 2019.
Hill started four games due to injuries during his third pro season, but he logged double-digit defensive snaps in just two other games. The main reason for his limited usage was the Seahawks' trade acquisition of Quandre Diggs, but it's a positive sign that Hill started over Marquise Blair during the final three weeks of the season while Diggs was hurt. Diggs and Bradley McDougald are in line to start in 2020, so Hill will compete with Blair and Tedric Thompson (shoulder) for reserve reps next year.
Hill is expected to start at free safety if Quandre Diggs' (ankle) can't play Sunday against the Cardinals, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
When Diggs left Week 15's win over the Panthers with a high-ankle sprain, Hill took over at free safety, playing 43 defensive snaps and recording five tackles. Hill started two games this year already, and while he's less rangy than Diggs, the 2017 third-round pick is a worthy placeholder.
Hill (elbow) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Hill leveraged the bye week to help him return from a four-game hiatus. The third-year pro likely will work in a rotational safety role behind starter's Bradley McDougald and Quandre Diggs.
