A third-round pick being waived two weeks into his first season in the league with the team that drafted him? Surprising. That player being claimed is not surprising. He should add depth to a talented Cincinnati secondary but not right out of the gate since he will have to learn a new playbook and scheme. He was talented coming out of Notre Dame and should be a big time pick up for the Bengals down the road.

This sounds about right considering Russell's lukewarm draft stock entering this spring, however when taking into account how high Andy Reid and co. drafted Russell (3rd round) this becomes a head-scratching move. Expect him to be scooped by a team looking for DB help.

Russell was the 74th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. In three seasons for Notre Dame, he amassed seven career tackles for loss and five interceptions. Russell broke his right tibia last November and remarkably still showed well at the combine. The Chiefs did not feel the need to keep him on the roster but he will find a new home soon.

Russell layed college football at the University of Notre Dame and is expected to play in sub packages for the Chiefs this season.
