Chiefs re-signed RB Kareem Hunt to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Per FOX NFL’s Jordan Schultz, Hunt can make another million dollars via incentives. The veteran back re-joined Kansas City early in the 2024 season after Isiah Pacheco went down with a broken leg. Hunt was one of the league’s least explosive backs but did get what was blocked more often than not, making him a high-floor option for a team that doesn’t place much emphasis on its ground game. Even when Pacheco returned, the Chiefs kept Hunt in a 1A role, giving him an average of 9.1 carries per game with Pacheco active. Kansas City also took a dart throw on Elijah Mitchell in free agency, putting another name in the mix for touches. This is shaping up to be one of the league’s least exciting backfield committees for fantasy purposes once again.
Kareem Hunt rushed three times for nine yards in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIX defeat to the Eagles, adding a five-yard reception.
The Chiefs had no shot at establishing the run as Philly caved in the Chiefs’ front with only a four-man rush. An emergency Week 2 signing after Isiah Pacheco suffered a broken leg, Hunt ended up easily leading the Chiefs in rushing, having his most productive campaign on the ground since 2020. Efficiency was not his forte — he averaged a wheezing 3.64 yards per carry, and was bottom five in average rush yards over expected — but Hunt wasn’t signed to be efficient. His role was to grind out third-and-shorts and handle the rock near the goal line, which he did with aplomb. Going on 30 with increasingly dead legs, Hunt isn’t going to get a 2025 reprise opportunity as lead back, but it’s possible he’s earned himself another year as a committee player in Patrick Mahomes’ backfield.
Kareem Hunt rushed 17 times for 64 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City’s AFC Championship win over the Bills.
He added one catch for six yards on his only target. Hunt took a first-and-10 from the Buffalo 12 for a score on Kansas City’s opening drive, Hunt appeared to leave the field with injury a few times, though it was never serious enough for him to not check back in. It wouldn’t be surprising if he popped up on the injury report before the Super Bowl. Hunt had 38 snaps, easily outperforming Isiah Pacheco, and if healthy will come into the Super Bowl as Kansas City’s lead back.
Kareem Hunt rushed eight times for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ Divisional Round win over the Texans, adding a two-yard reception.
With everything on the line, Hunt ran ahead of Isiah Pacheco, who doesn’t seem to be over his regular season injury issues. That would make Hunt “the DFS play” for conference championship weekend, but this will be a backfield best avoided if you can afford to do so.
