Jets waived RB Josh Adams.
Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, Michael Carter, and La'Mical Perine are the top-four running backs in New York. It always looked like an uphill battle for Adams to make the roster over of any of those four. Adams figures to slot in as a depth piece for any team he signs with.
Jets re-signed RB Josh Adams to a one-year contract.
Adams was a restricted free agent the Jets declined to tender at the "low" level. Going on 25, Adams has touched the ball only 43 times over the past two seasons in New York after experiencing stronger usage as an Eagle in 2018. The Jets' backfield needs to be completely remade, but Adams is unlikely to transcend role player/special teams status.
Josh Adams rushed two times for eight yards and a touchdown in the Jets' Week 1 loss to the Bills, adding two receptions for 14 yards.
Promoted from the practice squad on Saturday, Adams took over as the closest thing the Jets had to a "lead back" following Le'Veon Bell's hamstring injury. Adams was only on the roster because Lamical Perine (ankle) wasn't quite ready to go. There is a world where Adams offers desperation FLEX value for Week 2 against the 49ers, but we are multiple Bell and Perine health updates away from that for the time being.
Adams didn't see the field in Week 17 and finishes the season with eight carries for 12 yards and no catches in three games played.
Adams didn't make much of an impact after being called up from the Jets' practice squad. The 23-year-old running back is under contract for next season at the minimum cap hit of just $660,000, so he should compete for a depth spot behind Le'Veon Bell in 2020.
