Stewart could be supplanted by Wayne Gallman as Saquon Barkley's primary backup, SNY reports.
Gallman is a holdover from the prior regime, but he played decently behind a bad line last year, is only 23 and is impressing his new coaches in camp. Stewart has a two-year $6.9 million deal and played for GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina, but he's 31 and hasn't been efficient in several years.
Stewart and DeMarco Murray are scheduled for visits with the Lions on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
With Ameer Abdullah entering the final year of his rookie contract on the heels of a season in which he was limited to 3.3 yards per carry, Detroit is one of the obvious destinations for free-agent running backs. Stewart turns 31 next week and managed only 3.4 yards per carry for the Panthers last season, but he did score five times in his final five games, including a 103-yard, three-score effort against the stingy Minnesota defense in Week 14. He'd be part of a committee in Detroit, where Theo Riddick is locked in on passing downs and Abdullah still figures to compete for carries.
The Panthers released Stewart on Wednesday, Bryan Strickland of the Panthers' official site reports.
A first-round selection of Carolina in 2008, Stewart's 10-year tenure in the organization will come to an end following a season in which he averaged a career-worst 3.4 yards per carry while playing second fiddle to 2017 first-round selection Christian McCaffrey for much of the second half of the campaign. Stewart, who leaves the Panthers as the franchise's all-time rushing leader, had one year remaining on his contract after reaching an extension with the club last spring. Set to turn 31 years old in March and with his productivity on the decline, Stewart may be hard pressed to find work elsewhere as anything more than a low-usage depth back.
Stewart (foot) participated in practice Thursday, Bryan Strickland of the Panthers' official site reports.
Foot concerns have plagued Stewart in the past, but his return to drills Thursday is a step in the right direction to avoid any missed time. Aside from a 40-snap workload Week 5, his snap count has ranged from 21 to 29 in every other game this season, during which he's averaged 13.7 carries for 44.3 yards per game while scoring four combined touchdowns in 12 contests. Meanwhile, rookie Christian McCaffrey has received the larger share of backfield reps but primarily acted as a pass catcher. With their roles clearly defined, Stewart will continue to receive most of the work on the ground, assuming his health checks out by game day.
