Joe Staley
Player News
49ers LT Joe Staley announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons.
After the 49ers traded for disgruntled Redskins LT Trent Williams, this was the expected outcome, though the Niners said back in February they expected Staley back for a 14th season. Staley will turn 36 later this year and has spent his entire career in the Bay Area. He missed nine regular-season games last season with a broken leg but was back for the playoff run. Staley made six Pro Bowls and was a second-team All-Pro selection three times. Staley started all 181 games he appeared in after being taken 28th overall in the 2007 draft out of Central Michigan. Staley remained one of the best tackles in the sport when healthy.
Staley said he injured his thumb during Sunday's 31-20 Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs and required four stitches, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Staley was forced to leave Sunday's game early in the second half, but he managed to retake the field during the fourth quarter. The 35-year-old tackle's injury shouldn't impact his availability for OTAs or training camp.
Staley (hand) has retaken the field for Sunday's Super Bowl against Kansas City, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Staley was forced off the field in the third quarter due to a hand injury, but he's managed to return to game-action. The stalwart left tackle's presence will provide a notable boost for the 49ers' offensive line.
Staley is questionable to return to Sunday's Super Bowl against the Chiefs due to a hand injury, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Staley left the field midway through the third quarter. As long as the All-Pro is unable to take the field, Justin Skule will slot in at left tackle for the 49ers.
