49ers CB Jason Verrett tore his Achilles at practice Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season.
The team announced the injury on their account. Verrett just can't catch a break. He's played only 20 games in the last five seasons and has suffered several serious injuries. A torn Achilles at 31 is generally a career-ender in NFL terms. We'll see how much desire Verrett has to work his way back, but this is devastating for him.
49ers activated CB Jason Verrett (knee) from the reserve/PUP list.
At the start of the season, Verrett was still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in Week 1 of the 2021 season. The 49ers played it safe and sent him to the PUP list, giving him extra time to work his way back. In 2020, Verrett stayed mostly healthy and logged two interceptions plus seven pass defenses. He will likely be eased into the lineup for his first game of the 2022 season.

John Lynch told reporters that they were just "being safe" with Verrett as he attempts to come back from a torn ACL suffered in Week 1 of last season. He will miss the first four games of the season. San Francisco invested heavily in corner depth these past two offseasons and should be in a good spot as Verrett gets healthy. The team also placed DT Kalia Davis on the reserve/non-football injury list, and he will also miss at least four weeks.

Verrett had a bounce-back 2020 after dealing with injuries for several years, but a torn ACL ended his 2021 season in Week 1. Nearly a year removed from the injury, it is a small concern he is not ready to go. Verrett coming back healthy would be a big boost to the secondary.
