Giants signed QB Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million contract.

Although the Giants are undoubtedly tired of waiting on fellow free agent Aaron Rodgers, this hardly precludes his signing. Winston’s deal is modest even for a backup, especially one with his box scores and experience. He’s a seat warmer/emergency option for a team that had only Tommy DeVito under contract at the most important position. The question now becomes if he will be a clipboard holder or bridge option. It will be the former if Rodgers comes board. The latter if the G-Men take a Day 1 rookie QB. 31 years old, Winston proved last season he’s an old dog who won’t be learning any tricks. He slings it all over the yard, interceptions and all. He’s an “any given Sunday” No. 2 option, but a poor bet as a multi-month starter.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports free agent QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the Giants on Tuesday.

The Giants continue to wait for a decision from Aaron Rodgers, but they aren’t letting this hold-up stop them from exploring other options. Having already met with Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson, the Giants are now setting their sights on Winston, who threw for 2,121-13-12 in 12 games with the Browns last season. The former No. 1 overall pick wouldn’t be expected to solve any long-term issues for the Giants’ quarterback conundrum, but he would provide a solid veteran presence for whatever young quarterback they bring in and should give Malik Nabers a chance to thrive as long as he’s under center.

Josina Anderson reports the Chargers and 49ers “have been in conversation with Jameis Winston for potential back up roles.”

Winston’s days as a starter or even a bridge quarterback appear to be over, but he should still make good money as a backup. He started seven games for the Browns in 2024, throwing for 2,038 yards, 12 touchdowns, and as many picks in those contests. Winston may need a few more quarterback dominoes to fall before he gets a deal, but his money is on the way.

Jameis Winston said he would “absolutely” be willing to sign with the Giants this offseason.

Winston was asked by Saquon Barkley, of all people, about the possibility of signing with the Giants during Super Bowl media day. His response should be taken with a grain of salt, but Winston was quick to point out that he’s set to hit free agency this offseason while adding “I want to keep playing and doing what I do best.” As things stand right now, the Giants do not have a quarterback under contract for the 2025 season. While Winston wouldn’t make sense as a long-term solution, his value as a bridge quarterback who is a former No. 1 pick with tons of experience can’t be overstated. Winston threw for 2121-13-12 in 12 games last season while completing 61.1 percent of his passes.
