Cardinals signed S Jalen Thompson to a three-year, $40 million contract extension.
The contract includes $24.6 million guaranteed. Thompson was set to hit free agency at the end of the season. His new deal keeps him in Arizona through the 2025 season. Originally selected by the Cardinals in the fifth round of the supplemental draft, Thompson emerged as an every-down player last year. He played on 91 percent of the Cardinals' defensive snaps and was credited with 12 starts. He leveraged the expanded role into 121 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass defenses.
Thompson tallied 57 tackles (45 solo), three pass defenses and one interception in 15 games during the 2019 season.
The Cardinals used a fifth-round pick in July's supplemental draft on Thompson, who was available at that point after the NCAA ruled him ineligible. Over the first four contests of the campaign, he was a healthy scratch one game while playing specifically special teams in the others. Once he got a chance on defense Week 5, though, Thompson was a mainstay in the secondary, starting nine of the final 12 outings at strong safety. Considering his performance, he's likely locked in a role in the first-team D next to Budda Baker for 2020, at the very least.
Thompson (concussion) is active for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Thompson suffered a concussion during Week 13's loss to the Rams, but he was able to clear the league's protocol in time. The rookie fifth-round pick has been working as the starting strong safety lately and posted 18 tackles (17 solo) and an interception over the last three games.
Thompson (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Steelers, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Thompson managed to practice in full Friday, but it remains to be seen whether he's fully cleared the league's five-step protocol for head injuries. The rookie fifth-round pick may still need to receive clearance from an independent neurologist before retaking the field.
