Raiders signed WR Jalen Guyton, formerly of the Chargers.
Guyton joins a relatively crowded receiver room. Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers are locked for their typical roles and second-year receiver Tre Tucker is also expected to take another step forward. Couple all of this with the fact they recently signed Michael Gallup, and it’s hard to imagine Guyton earning anything more than a backup role. He spent the majority of his time as a backup while with the Chargers, often keeping opposing secondaries on their toes while sprinting repeatedly downfield. Guyton has played in 46 games over his five-year career and has a receiving line of 71-1112-7. He’s been targeted on just 10.3 percent of his routes run, which is about what we’d expect for a one-trick pony.
ESPN’s Field Yates reports the Raiders hosted free agent WR Jalen Guyton for a visit.
One of the league’s premiere wind sprinters, Guyton caught just 10 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown last season and has a career line of 71-1112-7 over 46 games. Possessing long speed and the ability to occasionally blow past defenders, Guyton has plenty to offer teams as a field stretcher, but he doesn’t do much in the way of demanding targets when on the field. Whether it’s with the Raiders or another team, he should get a chance to compete for a spot on a 53-man roster this offseason.
Jalen Guyton caught 1-of-3 targets for five yards in the Chargers’ Week 13 win over the Patriots.
One of Guyton’s missed connections was a first quarter end zone look. He was barely heard from after as the Pats played a tough defensive game in the rain. Guyton is probably going to pop up for a long score at some point, but there is little point in trying to predict when. He’s not much of a WR5 heading into Week 14 against the Broncos.
Jalen Guyton caught 1-of-5 targets for four yards in the Chargers’ Week 12 loss to the Ravens.
Even with rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston departing early with injury, Guyton managed just one catch on the evening. Guyton has never been able to command targets at an elite rate in a downfield role, but things have never been this bad for the downfield threat. He can safely be left on the waiver wire for the remainder of the season.
