2024 Player Outlook

Once upon a time folks said Evan Engram "couldn't catch". Some drops in key moments certainly contributed to that. After his 2023 season where he led all tight ends in receptions and finished fourth among all players, I think we can put that to rest. Calvin Ridley is now gone but, with Christian Kirk returning from injury as well as the additions of Gabe Davis and rookie Brian Thomas Jr., Engram will have some competition for targets this year. Doug Pederson's penchant for tight end screens should keep Engram in the mix and make him a fairly safe play, especially in PPR.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said Evan Engram is a fit for the “joker” role.

“I’m excited,” Payton added. This was always the belief behind the signing, as The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider forecasted the role on Engram. But it’s good to see it affirmed by the man who created the terminology. As Denver’s “joker” — in football, anyway — Engram projects to be a high-volume target and should make for a low-end TE1 for fantasy purposes.

The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider believes TE Evan Engram will be deployed in a “Joker” role in 2025.

Payton said he’s wanted a versatile pass catcher in the Denver offense, and the Broncos lavished a $23 million deal on Engram ostensibly for that role. “I use that term for when you have one of those guys who are matchup challenges inside,” Payton said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. “It really helps you (on) third down and (in the) red zone. There are ways defensively you can handle the outside receivers and force the ball inside. That is something we will look closely at.” Engram could step in as Denver’s No. 2 pass catcher behind Courtland Sutton in 2025. Engram in 2024 saw a target on 27 percent of his pass routes, fourth best among tight ends.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports free agent TE Evan Engram is visiting the Chargers on Tuesday.

Engram has also visited the Broncos since being released by the Jaguars. The Chargers are a team that likes to utilize their tight ends with a heavy run game, but Engram would be a receiving-first addition. He dealt with a shoulder injury last season, limiting him to just 47 receptions for 365 yards. However, he has a 114-catch 2023 season under his belt. Engram would compete with Will Dissly for tight end snaps but also has the ability to take slot snaps and be more of a receiver rather than an in-line blocker.
