Elijhaa Penny was held without a touch in the Giants' Week 18 loss to Washington.
Penny did draw two passing-game targets, bringing his season total to a career-high 13. Penny's 24 2021-22 rushes were also a new career high, though that is obviously not saying much for a 28-year-old lead blocker. Now headed to free agency, Penny's New York future is uncertain with the Giants headed for major front office changes. Penny has been with the G-Men since 2018.
Giants re-signed FB Elijhaa Penny to a two-year contract.
Penny had been headed for restricted free agency. Primarily a lead blocker, injuries did briefly force Penny into a running role last season. Ultimately, he played just 127 snaps on offense, featuring more regularly on special teams.
Penny (back) carried the ball 15 times for 39 yards across 16 games in 2019. He also secured two of four targets for nine yards.
Penny plays a key role on special teams for the Giants, and he also occasionally contributes on offense as a blocker. The 26-year-old is set to become a restricted free agent, and it remains to be seen if the Giants will opt to retain him.
Penny was forced out of Sunday's game against the Eagles with a back injury, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Penny rarely rushes the ball with just 15 carries over 15 games, but he's a valued fullback while contributing on special teams. The Giants don't have another fullback, so they may opt to use either Kaden Smith or Garrett Dickerson in the backfield if necessary.
