Manning will hold a press conference Friday to announce his retirement from professional football, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
Manning reportedly didn't intend to return to the Giants in 2020 as a backup, but he gave some thought to exploring free agency if the opportunity existed to compete for a starting job. It didn't take him long to decide against that second option, with the 39-year-old perhaps realizing he would be the underdog in any of these theoretical job battles. He'll step away from the game with two Super Bowl MVPs and a career 117-117 record as a starter in the regular season, with his good health and longevity atop the Giants' depth chart allowing him to rank seventh in NFL history in passing yards (57,023) and passing touchdowns (366). Meanwhile, New York will move forward with Daniel Jones as its signal-caller.
Manning said Monday that he'll take time this offseason to determine whether he wants to retire from the NFL or continue his career in 2020, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
If Manning is serious about playing in 2020 and there's still a market for his services, he'll likely have to don a different uniform, as the 38-year-old acknowledged he wasn't interested in returning to the Giants for another year of backing up Daniel Jones. During his four starts in 2019, Manning completed 91 of 147 passes (61.9 percent) for 7.1 yards per attempt, six touchdowns and five interceptions, guiding the Giants to a 1-3 record in those contests.
Manning will return to a backup role for Sunday's game at Washington, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Daniel Jones has been cleared to rejoin the starting lineup after missing the past two games with an ankle sprain. As such, Manning will return to the No. 2 job before his contract expires at the conclusion of the league year. He reportedly hopes to continue his NFL career, but it isn't clear if he'd be willing to settle for a backup job.
Manning completed 20 of 28 passes for 283 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 36-20 win over the Dolphins.
Manning tossed a 51-yard touchdown to Golden Tate in the second quarter and a five-yarder to Darius Slayton in the third. He nearly had another third-quarter score, but receiver Sterling Shepard came up just short of the end zone and Saquon Barkley punched it in on the ground one play later. With some decent weapons around him, the veteran quarterback should get some consideration in two-quarterback formats against the Redskins in Week 16, assuming Daniel Jones (ankle) isn't reinserted under center over Manning.
