E.J. Manuel
Player News
Manuel is retiring from football, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Manuel signed with Kansas City earlier this offseason to compete with Chad Henne for the backup quarterback job. The 2013 first-round pick has now decided to step away from football, perhaps discouraged by the plethora of quarterbacks on the Chiefs' roster. In addition to Henne and starter Patrick Mahomes, the team currently is carrying Chase Litton and three undrafted rookies. Manuel was cut by Oakland in September and spent the entire 2018 season unsigned.
Bills decline EJ Manuel’s fifth-year option for 2017.
With Tyrod Taylor in complete control of the Bills quarterbacking duties, there was absolutely zero need to pick up Manuel's option for 2017. He didn't play well when he was the starter during his first couple of seasons with the team and won't get the chance with the aforementioned Taylor controlling the sleigh. Manuel is headed for a career of holding clipboards and the occasion start when an injury in front of him occurs.
Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said QB EJ Manuel is still the team’s second-string quarterback, even though he was inactive for Week 10’s game against the New York Jets.
Tyrod Taylor has locked down the starting job so their is no hope for Manuel to overtake that role unless Taylor goes down with an injury. The Jets could look to trade Manuel in the offseason if Taylor is able to continue his stretch of strong play and lead Buffalo into the playoffs.
EJ Manuel completed 24-of-42 passes for 298 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding eight carries for 38 yards in the Bills 34-31 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.
In his two starts since replacing the injured Tyrod Taylor, Manuel has completed 61.9% of his passes for 561 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Buffalo has lost each of these games and Manuel's turnovers have proven to be costly but what we saw on Sunday was likely the max potential of Manuel as he is capable of gaining yards through the air and with his legs but is prone to turnovers which will limit him to being a mediocre NFL QB. The Bills will have a bye in Week 8 and Tyrod Taylor could be healthy enough to retake his starting role come Week 9.
