Duke Johnson retired from the NFL after eight seasons.

Johnson has appeared in just six games since 2021 and didn’t take an offensive snap in 2023 after spending the entire season as a free agent. Johnson entered the league as the all-time leading rusher at the University of Miami and was viewed early on as a versatile every-down back. While he never rushed for more than 410 yards in any of his eight seasons, Johnson had five seasons of 40 or more receptions and went for 400-plus passing yards in each of those seasons. Johnson totaled 5,135 yards from scrimmage and 23 touchdowns in his career.

Bills released RB Duke Johnson.

Signed to a one-year deal in March, Johnson was believed to be fighting Zack Moss for a roster spot, and it was Moss who had the better summer. Johnson just doesn't play special teams, so it's tough to make a club as a fourth running back that way. The former third-rounder is now 28 years old. Johnson averaged 4.6 YPC for the Dolphins last season.

The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia left Duke Johnson off his Bills 53-man roster projection.

Coming off some big performances for the Dolphins late last season, Johnson looked like he might have a path to touches when he signed a one-year deal in March, but things have changed since. Johnson appears to be well behind James Cook, who Buffalo drafted in the second round, and Zack Moss, who has earned rave reviews during camp after seemingly falling out of favor last season. As it stands, Johnson is on the outside looking in.

The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia cautions Duke Johnson is no lock to make the Bills' final roster and could even be inactive on game days this season.

Ace beat writer Buscaglia envisions Johnson in a T.J. Yeldon/Matt Breida type role for the Bills as a mere insurance RB3/4 should Zack Moss not take a step forward this year. And Buffalo may even use a draft pick on a running back. Johnson was viewed by some as the consolation prize after J.D. McKissic swerved the Bills in free agency, but Johnson got just $377,500 guaranteed on a near-minimum deal. He turns 29 this season. Johnson won't be a worthwhile fantasy pick unless there's an injury ahead of him.
