Former Ravens and Broncos DE Derek Wolfe announced his retirement after ten NFL seasons.
Wolfe was a key defensive player for the Broncos during the Peyton Manning era, as Wolfe recorded 11 total sacks in his first two years in the league. Wolfe, 32, last played with the Ravens in 2020. He suffered a severe back injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2021 season. In June, the Ravens reached an injury settlement with Wolfe.
Ravens released DE Derek Wolfe with an injury settlement.
Wolfe had a second surgery on his hip this offseason and had trouble playing through the issue last year, as the team had designated him to return but he was unable to play. There's still a chance he pops up somewhere else this offseason, but it'll be hard for him to win a job until he's healthy. Wolfe has been a solid run-stuffer and should find work if he can return to full health.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said DE Derek Wolfe (back) won't return this year.
Harbaugh didn't add any further details, only that Wolfe would not be able to return. The Ravens designated Wolfe to return from injured reserve at the end of October, opening a 21-day window for him to be officially activated. It's possible that he simply won't be able to make it back before the window closes which would permanently send him to injured reserve. Wolfe did not play in 2021 and will look to rebound in the second year of his three-season deal with Baltimore.
Ravens designated DE Derek Wolfe (back/hip) to return from injured reserve.
Wolfe, dealing with a back injury since August, was encouragingly available to practice on Tuesday. He'll have 21 days to be officially activated from injured reserve or miss the rest of the season.
