Deontay Burnett
Player News
Eagles waived/non-football injury WR Deontay Burnett.
It would appear 23-year-old Burnett was injured while working out away from the team. Burnett was active for all 16 games last season but caught just three passes for 19 yards. This, in one of the league's most injured receiver corps. 10 of Burnett's 15 career receptions came his 2018 rookie year with the Jets. Burnett's youth should earn him another opportunity, but his odds of breaking through as a pass catcher are rapidly diminishing.
Burnett finished the 2019 regular season with two catches on four targets for 48 yards and caught his only target of the Wild Card loss to Seattle for a five-yard gain.
Those were the only two games of the season for Burnett, who joined the Eagles' practice squad in mid-December before injuries necessitated his call-up. He was with the Jets in the preseason but spent the bulk of the year on the 49ers practice squad. The 22-year-old now heads into the offseason an exclusive-rights free agent and therefore will be back with the Eagles in 2020 if the club elects to extend him a qualifying offer.
Burnett was listed as one of the Eagles' three starting receivers Week 17 in the team's 34-17 win over the Giants, finishing with two receptions for 48 yards on four targets.
Though he received the starting nod in his first game with the Eagles since being promoted from the practice squad, Burnett essentially split the No. 3 receiver job with J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, with the two playing 15 and 17 percent of the offensive snaps, respectively. Despite the light workload, Burnett still led the Eagles wideouts in yardage and finished second in receptions behind Greg Ward (six), while Arcega-Whiteside and Robert Davis combined to record zero catches on two targets. Burnett did the bulk of his damage on the first play of the fourth quarter, reeling in a 41-yard pass that helped set up a field goal. With Nelson Agholor (knee) seemingly trending toward another absence in Sunday's wild-card game against the Seahawks and with both Arcega-Whiteside and Davis having failed to take advantage of expanded reps in recent weeks, Burnett could benefit from a jump in playing time during the playoffs.
Burnett joined the Eagles' active roster Tuesday.
Burnett makes the jump from the team's practice squad as their already-beleaguered receiving corps picked up another injury in Sunday's win over the Cowboys when J.J. Arcega-Whiteside reinjured his foot. With Nelson Agholor (knee) likely out again Week 17, Burnett could see time behind Greg Ward, Arcega-Whiteside and Robert Davis.
