Cardinals signed TE Demetrius Harris, formerly of the Bears.
Arizona also brought in two additional defensive linemen, Josh Mauro and Margus Hunt, as well. Harris spent his 2020 season with the Bears, playing a mix of special teams and offense. A natural blocker and capable pass-catcher, Harris has a shot a cracking the Cardinals' final roster. The lineman Arizona signed may end up as nothing more than camp bodies. The Cardinals were missing four defensive linemen Tuesday and open their preseason on Friday.
Harris signed a contract with the Bears on Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Harris was cut by the Browns on Monday, and he wasted little time in agreeing to terms with the Bears. The 28-year-old tight end, who previously spent time with head coach Matt Nagy while in Kansas City, now joins a Chicago tight end corps that's struggled to attain consistency with Trey Burton (hip) and Adam Shaheen (foot) in back-to-back seasons. He caught 15 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns across 15 games in Cleveland last year.
The Browns cut Harris on Monday, the team's official website reports.
Harris signed a two-year, $6 million contract last offseason, coming over from Kansas City after five seasons in a depth role behind Travis Kelce. The 28-year-old played 55.6 percent of offensive snaps for the Browns in 2019, but he was limited to a 15-149-3 receiving line on 27 targets, dropping five passes along the way. Harris may need to battle for a roster spot with his next team, while the Browns are left with David Njoku, Ricky Seals-Jones (RFA), Stephen Carlson and Pharaoh Brown (ERFA) at tight end.
Harris did not catch his only target in Sunday's 33-23 loss to the Bengals.
Harris was once again the playing-time leader (36 snaps) among Cleveland's tight ends. The six-year veteran caught 15 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns while playing a career-high snap count in 2019. The elevated snap count was largely due to David Njoku's wrist injury, as well as Njoku's subsequent residence in coach Freddie Kitchens' doghouse. Harris has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed in March 2019, but his playing time next season will depend on the whims of a new head coach. Kitchens was deposed following the season-ending loss to Cincinnati, and presumably Njoku, the Browns' first-round draft pick in 2017, will be given a clean slate.
