Giants release David Wilson and saves the team $1.3 million against this year's salary cap.
Wilson has been hampered by injuries throughout his short career, so the Giants have decided to cut bait and save themselves some money. After suffering a career-ending neck injury in training camp last summer, Wilson is setting his sights on the 2016 Olympics.
David Wilson told Dave Briggs of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN that he hopes to return to another sport in which he had a high degree of success, track and field.
So long as there\'s not hitting or tackling involved, perhaps Wilson can compete. It\'s hard to say given the extent of his neck issue. We wish him nothing but the best in his efforts to remain in a competitive sport.
David Wilson (neck) announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from football.
This is a truly sad story for a kid with a lot of promise coming out of Virginia Tech. The neck burner he suffered caused \"numbness\" in his hands and lower extremities and Wilson\'s spinal surgeon advised him against playing football. You have to give the young player credit for taking this in stride saying \"Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too ... Don\'t feel sorry for me or pity me.\" At just 23 years old, it appears Wilson is content with retirement.
David Wilson cleared waivers Tuesday and was placed on Reserve/Injured.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Wilson\'s football career is likely over. He has battled neck issues throughout his career and it just isn\'t safe for him to play. Maybe modern medicine will be able to solve his issues, but as of now, it is likely that he has played his final game.
