49ers signed TE Daniel Helm.
Helm was on the Bucs' practice squad, but with Jordan Reed (knee) sidelined for the next two months, they need bodies. Helm is familiar with coach Kyle Shanahan after spending time with the Niners in recent seasons. George Kittle and Ross Dwelley are the top two options still.
Helm did not receive any playing time after being signed late in the 2019 season.
Helm was signed from the practice squad in December following Garrett Celek's placement on IR. The latter has decided to retire, so there is a chance the undrafted rookie sticks with San Francisco if the team liked what they saw in practice during his rookie campaign. Helm wasn't much of a receiving threat at Duke, so his fantasy upside is limited, especially if he remains on the back end of a roster.
The 49ers signed Helm to the active roster from the practice squad Thursday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Helm's chance on the 53-man roster comes following the placement of Garrett Celek (back) on injured reserve. The undrafted rookie out of Duke will slot in as the No. 4 tight end on San Francisco's roster.
Helm signed with the 49ers on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Helm will have his work cut out for him in order to earn a spot on the 49ers' final roster. He will be competing against Levine Toilolo, Kaden Smith, Ross Dwelley and Tyree Mayfield for the depth chart's No. 3 spot.
