Panthers agreed to terms with EDGE D.J. Wonnum, formerly of the Vikings, on a two-year contract.
Wonnum totaled eight sacks in 15 games for the Vikings last season and has now hit that mark twice in his four-year career. The former fourth-round pick will be tasked with replacing some of the sack production long-time Panther Brian Burns provided during his five-year tenure with the team, leaving him with big shoes to fill on a defense that’s been gutted throughout the week. Wonnum has a career pass rush rate of 59.4 percent and will likely work primarily as a pass rusher in Ejiro Evero’s scheme.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Vikigns EDGE D.J. Wonnum suffered a partially torn quad in Week 16 against the Lions.
Though Rapoport didn’t outright say Wonnum was done for the year, he indicated as much, saying the news is “an indication he’s played his last down this season.” Wonnum has eight sacks, seven TFLs, and 62 total tackles. He tied his career-high in both sacks and TFLs in just 15 games while easily setting a high watermark in tackles. Set to enter free agency, Wonnum should earn a sizable contract coming off a breakout season.
Vikings EDGE D.J. Wonnum was carted off the field in the fourth quarter against the Lions.
Wonnum suffered an apparent non-contact knee injury. While attempting to rush the passer, he buckled and went to the ground before grabbing his left knee. The fourth-year EDGE defender is in the midst of a breakout season. He has eight sacks and seven TFLs. He also has a scoop-and-score touchdown to his name this season.
