Bears signed LB Christian Jones, formerly of the Lions.
Jones is returning to Chicago after spending the past three seasons as a Lions starter. Jones' primary strength is availability, as he is neither an above average pass rusher nor run stopper. He is essentially the definition of a replacement-level player, one you can rely on in a pinch, but someone who would ideally not be a starter.
Lions released LB Christian Jones.
It makes the two-year extension the Lions handed him in mid-2019 even more confusing. A Matt Patricia favorite, Jones was admittedly a league-average player in all facets of the game. His release clears $2.6 million in cap space.
Jones is facing a 2-to-4 month recovery after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder Friday, Matt Schoch of The Detroit News reports.
The 28-year-old sustained the shoulder injury during Week 14 and ended up missing the final three games of the season, but it appears he should be ready in time for training camp. Jones finished with 51 tackles (29 solo), two sacks and four passes defensed in 13 games and inked a two-year extension with the Lions in November,
Jones (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
Jones was able to practice twice over the past week, albeit in a limited fashion, but he was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Broncos. The Lions will now shut him down for the season. When Jones was active this year, he averaged 47.5 defensive snaps per game, and he finished the year with 51 tackles, two sacks and four pass breakups over 13 outings.
