Christian Hackenberg
Player News
The Jets believe Hackenberg has a higher ceiling than Bryce Petty (shoulder), the NY Daily News reports.
Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has announced his retirement.
Gailey was not expected to continue with the Jets next season, however this news means he won't be with anyone. Gailey has been a well-traveled coach between the NFL and college ranks but this past season with the Jets, even when having a fully healthy offense, was abysmal. With Todd Bowles staying in place, at least reportedly, Gang Green will need to find a new head man for the offense as well as some more talent all over the field.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles said Christian Hackenberg will not play unless there is an injury to Bryce Petty.
The Jets are in full tilt explore mode with trying to find out what they have in the young QBs on the roster. However that doesn't mean that this year's draft pick in Hackenberg will be part of that, at least yet. Petty looked listless against Indy on Monday Night in Week 13, but so did the rest of the Jets as a whole. Petty was thought to be a solid development prospect when they drafted him out of Baylor, and now it's time for that to come to fruition.
Christian Hackenberg's throwing motion is a work in progress for the Jets.
Despite it being a work in progress, the Jets are focused on developing the young quarterback. "It's like a golfer", said QB coach Kevin Patullo, "You don't want to change his swing midseason." With the team resigning Ryan Fitzpatrick and still having Geno Smith and Bryce Petty on the roster, the Jets can afford to take the time and develop their second-rounder. Don't expect to see Hackenberg take the field this season.
