Long has made it clear throughout the offseason he was contemplating hanging up his cleats, as he even agreed to have the date for his $1 million roster bonus pushed back to the first day of training camp. The 34-year-old finishes his career with a pair of Super Bowl rings, 332 tackles, 70 sacks and 15 forced fumbles across 11 seasons with the Rams, Patriots and Eagles.

This move effectively puts a deadline in place for Long to make a decision on his future in football. After racking up 6.5 sacks as a 33-year-old in 2018, Long proved he still has some usefulness as a rotational pass rusher.

Defensive end was a position at which New England has some depth before signing Long, but they're now quite deep at that position. Long reportedly wanted to play for a contending team, and the Pats are obviously perennial contenders. Long has had some health issues playing just 18 games the last two years. He played in 12 games last year and recorded three sacks.

Long is looking for work after being let go by the Rams. The 8th year vet is looking to cash in on what will likely be his last big contract. His only value lies in deep IDP leagues that have a defensive end spot, and is a fringe play even in those.
