Browns waived DE Chad Thomas.
The 67th overall pick at the top of the third round in 2018, Thomas appeared in just four games as a rookie but did manage four sacks across 16 appearances last year. He didn't test that well at the Combine, but Thomas can play along the defensive line at 6'5/278, so he should get another look elsewhere.
Thomas played all 16 games, recording 26 tackles, four sacks, one pass defensed and one fumble recovery in 2019.
Thomas opened the season as depth on the defensive line, but had his playing time increased following Olivier Vernon's knee injury and Myles Garrett's suspension. The Browns may have discovered something in the 2018 third-round draft pick out of Miami. He has two more years remaining on his rookie deal and will be part of the rotation on the defensive line in 2020.
Thomas (chest/ribs) does not have an injury designation heading into Sunday's game against the Bengals, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Thomas practiced in full all week, so this result was expected. The 24-year-old has four sacks while appearing in all 13 games for the Browns.
Thomas recorded a sack on his lone tackle in Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Steelers.
Thomas posted a sack for the third time in the last four games and is making the most of increased playing time with Myles Garrett (suspension) out and Olivier Vernon just getting over a knee injury. Thomas himself was removed from Sunday's game but returned after a visit to the injury tent, according to Scott Patsko of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
