Brock Osweiler
Player News
Osweiler announced his retirement Wednesday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Osweiler struggled to find his footing over the last three years, making stops in Houston, Denver and Miami, so he'll hang up the cleats. The Broncos' 2012 second-round pick is best known for the team's 2015 Super Bowl run. Although he didn't play in the big game, there's no doubt he was a major reason they made it there. Osweiler took over for an injured Peyton Manning and registered a 5-2 record to secure the top seed in the AFC. Manning went on to win his second Super Bowl and the Broncos' third. Osweiler finished his career with a 15-15-0 record, 7,418 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 31 interceptions over 49 games (30 started).
Osweiler is slated to visit the Dolphins on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
This marks Osweiler's first free-agent visit since his 2017 contract with the Broncos expired. It's worth noting that Osweiler and Miami head coach Adam Gase worked together while both were with Denver, so there's a potential fit here, with the Dolphins' No. 2 QB slot behind Ryan Tannehill (who is bouncing back from a torn ACL) up for grabs.
Osweiler will start at quarterback Sunday against the Redskins, a Broncos teammate informed Mike Klis of 9 News Denver reports.
The Broncos aren't expected to officially name a starter until shortly after inactives are released approximately 90 minutes before the 1 p.m. EST kickoff, so until then, Klis' player-sourced report might be the clearest indication that Osweiler will garner the nod over Paxton Lynch (ankle). Since the Broncos don't have any other healthy quarterbacks on the roster, it's expected that Lynch will dress as Osweiler's backup, but he may only be available in an emergency with the ankle issue likely impacting Lynch's ability. It's believed that the Broncos are eager to give Lynch, a 2016 first-round pick, an extended look if he's healthy enough for the season finale Dec. 31 against the Chiefs, so Osweiler could head back to the bench following his presumptive start Sunday.
Though the Broncos have not confirmed their Week 16 starter at QB, Mike Klis of 9 News Denver suggests that the "signs point to" Osweiler drawing the assignment.
Per the report, fellow signal-caller Paxton Lynch (ankle) isn't quite 100 percent at this stage, so it appears likely that he'll give way to Osweiler on Sunday against Washington, with Lynch a candidate to start next weekend against the Chiefs.
