Raiders released QB Brian Hoyer.
While it’s too early to know for sure, it’s possible this is the end of the line for Hoyer, who turned 38 last year and has thrown just 150 passes since 2018. A former undrafted free agent who caught on with the Patriots in 2009, Hoyer has bounced around between nine different teams and has had three stints in New England alone. Hoyer has a 16-25 record as a starter and has thrown for 10,899-53-37 in his career. As a seasoned veteran, it’s possible a team brings him on to earn a spot in camp, but he’s offered very little as a backup in recent years.
After cleaning house, the Raiders are still favored against a Giants’ team trying to find their way. Rookie Aidan O’Connell will get his second start for the new-look record
Raiders declared QB Brian Hoyer, LB Divine Deablo, K James McCourt, CB Tyler Hall, WR Kristian Wilkerson, DT Byron Young, and DT Nesta Jade Silvera inactive for Week 8 against the Lions.
Hoyer had served as the backup or starter for the first seven weeks of the season but will now give way to rookie Aidan O’Connell for backup duties. He will be on the sidelines as the team’s emergency quarterback. Deablo, the Raiders’ leading tackler, will also miss Week 8 with an ankle injury after failing to practice at any point this week.
Brian Hoyer completed 17-of-32 passes for 129 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions in the Raiders’ 30-12, Week 7 loss to the Bears.
