Falcons signed LB Brandon Copeland, formerly of the Patriots, to a one-year contract.
Copeland has played 66 career games in the NFL, totaling 119 tackles, seven sacks and 19 quarterback hits. He's only two seasons removed from racking up a career-high five sacks with the Jets. He'll be used as depth in Atlanta.
Patriots signed LB Brandon Copeland, formerly of the Jets, to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
Copeland recorded five sacks in 16 games during 2018 but was given a four-game suspension in 2019 for violating the league's PED policy. He returned to a smaller role where he played less than a third of the team's defensive snaps. He recorded 1.5 sacks in 12 games (3 starts). Copeland adds depth to New England's linebacker unit but his primary function should come on special teams.
Copeland finished the 2019 campaign with 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Copeland was suspended for the first four games for violating the NFL's performance enhancing substances policy, and he was never able to rediscover his pass-rushing skills after returning, finishing with just 1.5 sacks after racking up 5.0 in 2018. On the bright side, Copeland set a new career high in tackles, topping his 2018 output by seven. His 2020 value will depend in large part on where Copeland lands, as he's an unrestricted free agent heading into the offseason.
Copeland (hip) is active for Sunday's game against the Redskins.
Copeland was deemed a game-time decision after incurring an injury during Week 10's win over the Giants. Considering the Jets considered shutting him down for this contest, there's a chance Copeland doesn't log a 100-percent snap share as he did over the last two weeks. When Copeland draws into a full workload, he's a solid IDP asset with 28 tackles over the last four outings.
