McCain joined the Vikings earlier this offseason and worked with defensive coordinator Brian Flores during his days in Miami. McCain played in 10 games last season with the Giants but totaled just one tackle. The 31-year-old safety could make for a nice depth signing, but his days as a starter appear long gone.

Last season, McCain appeared in 10 games as a backup for the Giants, where he totaled one tackle while breaking up one pass. The veteran safety has started 87 of the 131 games he’s appeared in over his career and shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a depth signing who is familiar with the defensive system.

McCain played 93% of the snaps last year for Washington, but they wanted to give Darrick Forrest a shot at an extended role and released him before free agency started. He signs on with the Giants for a season and will effectively replace Julian Love as their hybrid DB. McCain turns 30 in August and should be a good bet on a one-year deal. 

McCain's release saves the team $4.42 million, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that McCain was the "odd man out" with the Commanders having young talent in the secondary. McCain signed a two-year contract with the Commanders in 2022 but will play elsewhere in 2023. McCain is entering his age-30 season but should be able to find a role on another squad.
