Titans signed LB Ben Niemann, formerly of the Cardinals.
Niemann, a five-year veteran linebacker, played four seasons with the Chiefs before spending the 2022 season with the Cardinals. He has 21 starts in 79 career appearances over five seasons. Niemann should serve as a depth linebacker in defensive coordinator Shane Bowen's 3-4, linebacker-heavy defensive scheme.
Chiefs re-signed LB Ben Niemann to a one-year contract.
Niemann was scheduled for restricted free agency after playing a career-high 466 snaps (43%) last season, starting five of the 15 games he appeared in for the AFC champs. Niemann won't be guaranteed a starting gig headed into the 2021 campaign.
Niemann collected 56 tackles (35 solo) and one pass defensed during the 2019 season.
While teams are utilizing linebacker-heavy packages much less often in a pass-driven league, Niemann did log north of 400 defensive snaps in 2019 thanks to Anthony Hitchens missing a pair of games in the middle of the season. Niemann should serve in a similar role next season but could see his playing time increase if one or more starting linebackers miss time.
Niemann stepped in for the injured Anthony Hitchens (groin) Sunday and recorded 10 tackles (six solo) versus the Texans.
Niemann logged no more than 23 percent of the defensive snaps prior to Sunday night's contest, when he played 86 percent. He could be set for another big day next week if Hitchens' groin issue keeps him out for another game.
