Walter, the 19th overall pick in last month’s draft, can develop into a solid 3-and-D option in time. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well on Saturday, but the former Baylor guard made nearly 38% of his attempts last season. There’s plenty of room for growth, and Walter should benefit from playing alongside Immanuel Quickley, Scottie Barnes, and RJ Barrett as he hones his skills as a professional.

The Raptors selected Ja’Kobe Walter with the No. 19 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

In his lone season at Baylor, Walter accounted for 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steal, and 2.1 3-pointers per game, shooting 37.6% from the field and 79.2% from the foul line. Walter shot 34.1% from three, with nearly one-third of his overall shot attempts coming from beyond the arc, and the free-throw percentage suggests that there is room for added growth. His wingspan of 6-foot-10 was third-longest among guards at the combine, and he did reasonably well in the athletic testing. Walter will need to make strides as a defender and playmaker to be an effective pro, as the perimeter shooting ability is his best attribute right now. With the Raptors trading Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby last season, adding length and perimeter shooting potential in this draft was vital. Walter will need some time to develop consistency as a shooter, which will limit his fantasy value in the short term.
