Martin Jr. requested a trade over the summer after Houston drafted Jabari Smith Jr. The Rockets aren't in a rush to trade him, which gave him an opportunity in this game that he took advantage of. While he may not be with the team long-term, his performance may have increased his trade value enough for Houston to be willing to move him. Whether he's with the Rockets this season or gets traded, he won't be a draft target in standard leagues.

Due to the number of young players on the Rockets roster, especially in the frontcourt, Martin is due to face a lot of competition for playing time in 2022-23. This likely influenced his decision to request a trade, but this isn't something that the Rockets are rushing to accommodate. And, according to Iko, there's a feeling amongst some within the team that Martin will have some fences to mend in the aftermath of his request, especially if he isn't traded.

After being drafted late in the second round in 2020, Martin Jr. has more than exceeded expectations through his first two seasons in the league. However, with the Rockets likely to land one of Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren, or Jabari Smith Jr., Martin Jr.'s path to playing time isn't clear. It has been reported that there isn't any bad blood between Martin Jr. and Houston, but he's seeking to go to a team where he can play. Multiple contending teams have called Houston about his availability.

Martin Jr. and Garrison Mathews (whose contract will also be guaranteed) have played key roles for this rebuilding Rockets team, and it’s not surprising that they want to hold onto them for the rebuild. KJ Martin is at his best when Jae’Sean Tate is sidelined, and with Tate currently doubtful with left ankle soreness for tonight’s game against the Mavs, he’s worth a look.
