ESPN’s Shams Charania reports Javonte Green has agreed to a buyout with the Pelicans and intends to sign with the Cavaliers after clearing waivers.
Green appeared in 50 games for the Pelicans this season, making 18 starts. While his exit won’t significantly impact fantasy basketball, it frees up minutes for players like Brandon Boston Jr. and Antonio Reeves once the Pelicans decide to focus more on their draft lottery odds. As for Green’s fit in Cleveland (if he clears waivers), he gives the Cavaliers another athletic wing defender, which will be critical due to the need to deal with Boston and New York in the East.
Javonte Green started on Thursday and contributed nine points (4-of-7 FGs), seven rebounds, two assists, five steals, one block and one three-pointer against the Kings.
With Zion Williamson sidelined for the second night of the back-to-back, Green returned to the starting lineup. His main fantasy contribution came in the steals category, and one of his five swipes came in the final minute of overtime to help seal the win. For most of the season, Green hasn’t been able to contribute much value for fantasy managers, even when he has started. He played well in this game, and he may return to the starting lineup for one leg of the Pelicans’ next back-to-back, but he has limited appeal as a streaming option.
The Pelicans will start Javonte Green, Jose Alvarado, Trey Murphy III, CJ McCollum and Yves Missi for Thursday’s matchup with the Kings.
Green will re-join the starting five with Zion Williamson sidelined, though he’s not a particularly attractive streaming option. He’s averaged just 6.9 points and 4.2 rebounds across 17 stints in the starting lineup.
Javonte Green shot 1-of-5 from the field and 1-of-2 from the foul line in Monday’s loss to Denver, scoring four points with four rebounds, two assists, and one 3-pointer in 28 minutes.
Monday’s game was the first for New Orleans since losing Dejounte Murray to a ruptured right Achilles tendon. Green was the choice to fill the void, and he did not offer much value in that role. There was also a moment when the Pelicans wing went to the locker room for an unspecified issue, but he did return to action. Jose Alvarado, who started the second half of Friday’s game for Murray, played 22 minutes off the bench against the Nuggets and finished with eight points, two rebounds, four assists, and two 3-pointers. Alvarado offers a higher fantasy ceiling than Green, but it will be difficult for him to reach it when coming off the bench.
