Free agent guard Jerian Grant will sign with the Wizards.
Davis Bertans has opted not to play in Orlando, with the team's blessing, so they'll replace him on the roster with Grant. He's a career 32.4% shooter from deep, who gives the Wizards some added depth and backcourt defense, but there's unlikely to be fantasy value here.
Grant agreed Monday on a contract with the Qingdao Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association, Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.com reports.
The terms of Grant's deal aren't known, but his contract is likely far more lucrative than the offers he was fielding from NBA teams in free agency this summer. A 2015 first-round pick, Grant spent time with three teams during his first four NBA seasons, failing to distinguish himself as a capable backup point guard at any of those stops. He appeared in 60 games with the Magic in 2018-19, averaging 4.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per contest while shooting 41.8 percent from the floor, 65 percent from the free-throw line and 36.4 percent from three-point range.
Grant had his qualifying offer declined and will become an unrestricted free agent, David Aldridge of The Athletic reports.
Grant will become an unrestricted free agent after averaging 4.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 15.7 minutes across 60 games last year. It's unclear if he's expected to garner significant attention but has the potential to be a solid backup point guard if extended the opportunity.
Grant had nine points (3-4 FG, 3-4 3Pt), five rebounds, and one assist in 17 minutes during Sunday's 105-97 loss to the Grizzlies.
Grant has combined to earn 37 minutes across the last two contests with Isaiah Briscoe (knee) out. Given the lack of competition for playing time behind starting point guard D.J. Augustin, Grant will likely continue to earn decent minutes while operating as Augustin's primary backup unless Briscoe is able to return to the lineup sooner than he was originally expected.
