Marlins optioned Valente Bellozo to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Bellozo was hit hard against the Red Sox allowing five runs in his start for the Marlins on Tuesday and Miami decided they’d seen enough for now. He had a 4.50 ERA in 10 innings since being called up last week. Anthony Maldonado was recalled to take Bellozo’s roster spot.
Valente Bellozo was crushed for five runs over five innings on Tuesday in a loss to the Red Sox.
The good: eight strikeouts. The bad: everything else. Bellozo generated 12 swinging strikes and finished with a respectable 31 percent CSW in his second major league start, but he also served up seven hits, including a three-run homer to Ceddanne Rafaela in the fourth inning. The 24-year-old righty, who holds a respectable 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 10/1 K/BB ratio across 10 innings (two starts) since being called up last week, fits the mold of a serviceable back-of-the-rotation innings-eater, but we’re dubious he’ll continue to miss enough bats to be fantasy-relevant moving forward. He’ll face off against the White Sox on Sunday in his next outing.
Valente Bellozo struck out two over five shutout innings on Wednesday in his major-league debut against the Royals.
Bellozo departed in line for the win in his big-league debut on Wednesday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium after scattering two hits over five impressive frames, but the Marlins’ bullpen was unable to hold the lead. The unheralded 24-year-old righty, who was acquired back in April from the Astros, got the call to join Miami’s injury-ravaged starting rotation after just a handful of career starts in the upper minors. Given the lack of big-time strikeout stuff, we’re not expecting him to morph into a potential fantasy ace. He generated only six swinging strikes over five frames and posted a lackluster 22 percent CSW. However, it seems like he’s going to get an extended look with the Marlins, and could be a useful streaming option in deeper mixed leagues, depending on the matchup. He’s in line to face the Red Sox on Tueday in his next outing.
