Mason Black was tagged for five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings Monday to take a loss to the Phillies in his major league debut.

Black’s sweeper and slider were effective today; he threw the two a combined 43 times without ever giving up a hard-hit ball. Alas, he allowed six on fastballs and changeups, one of them a three-run homer on a 92.4 mph sinker to Bryce Harper. That rather matches the scouting report on Black. He’s boasted very strong strikeout rates in the minors, but he’s always going to have trouble getting the heater past major league bats. He’ll likely stay in the rotation for now and face the Reds this weekend. After that, he could be replaced by Blake Snell.

Giants recalled RHP Mason Black from Triple-A Sacramento.

The move was announced yesterday but is now official. Black will make his MLB debut on Monday afternoon against the Phillies after posting an impressive 1.01 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and a 29/8 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings at Triple-A this year. He’s worth a stash in most formats even if you don’t start him today. Daulton Jefferies was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Giants’ manager Bob Melvin told reporters after Sunday’s game that Mason Black will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento to start on Monday against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

The 24-year-old hurler will be making his major league debut. He has been outstanding through his first six starts at Triple-A Sacramento this season, registering a minuscule 1.01 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and a 29/8 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings of work. If he pitches well, there’s a chance that he could stick around for a while, which would make him a very intriguing option in fantasy leagues.

Giants RHP prospect Mason Black reeled off five shutout innings on Friday for Triple-A Sacramento.

Black struck out seven and only issued two walks over five hitless frames. The 24-year-old righty generated some buzz this spring in Giants camp and holds a sparkling 1.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 17/3 K/BB ratio across 13 2/3 innings (three starts) to open the year. He’s a name to watch closely in deeper dynasty league formats.
