2024 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: Matsui was the youngest pitcher to earn 200 saves in Nippon Professional Baseball, amassing a 2.43 ERA across his career, dating back to 2014! Matsui boasts impressive velocity for his stature, and his splitter should be effective from day one in the MLB. The Padres wanted to beef up the bullpen in the offseason and they did that. However, for fantasy purposes, this could end up being a closer by committee situation that drives us all up a wall.
2024 Outlook: Robert Suarez figures to have the inside track to the job to begin the year, but Matsui and fellow offseason signee Woo Suk Go will be in the mix. This is a situation to monitor, because a strong spring for Matsui could really help him separate as the clear next man up for saves, or perhaps even split opportunities or win the job outright. I believe he opens the year as the setup man for San Diego, but he'll see some saves, too, making him a very valuable target at ADP in SV+H leagues.
