Yankees optioned LHP Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees plan to re-sign Adam Ottavino to a major league deal on Monday and they needed to free up a roster spot to do so, which unfortunately means that Headrick finds himself on the outside looking in at the moment. The 27-year-old hurler had been terrific in four appearances with the Yankees, firing 5 1/3 scoreless innings with a 0.56 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio. It shouldn’t take him long to earn another opportunity with the Yankees.
Brent Headrick gave up three runs while getting three outs Monday in his start against the Jays.
Headrick was supposed to go at least two today, but he was pulled from both the first and second innings. He impressed with his velocity up about two mph at the beginning of the spring, but the uptick has since vanished, and with a 7.27 ERA, he seems like a long shot to make the Yankees.
Brent Headrick struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief Wednesday against the Cardinals.
It was surprising to see the Twins give up on Headrick when they needed to open a spot on the 40-man this month, and the early returns for the Yankees have been great; his velocity is up a bit, and he’s thus far fanned seven in three innings. Since he has an option year left and several alternatives don’t, it’s going to be tough for him to make the Yankees. Still, he could turn out to be very useful in middle relief.
Yankees claimed LHP Brent Headrick off waivers from the Twins.
Headrick joins the Yankees to add depth to the pitching staff, and has a pair of options remaining. It seems unlikely he’ll be a big factor for the New York bullpen in 2025.
