Drew Thorpe will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

It’s a brutal development for Thorpe, who has battled elbow issues since late August and experienced offseason several setbacks while trying to ramp up his throwing program. The 24-year-old top pitching prospect will be sidelined into the 2026 campaign.

Drew Thorpe (elbow) was removed from a minor league start on Thursday due to renewed soreness in his right elbow.

The 24-year-old right-hander received a cortisone injection at the beginning of February to combat the soreness in his elbow and has still been very slow to progress since then. It’s unclear at the moment if there are any plans for him to undergo imaging to see what’s going on there, but he’ll almost certainly open the season on the injured list.

Drew Thorpe (elbow) will throw a live bullpen session Tuesday.

Thorpe will get a couple of live BP sessions before moving to a five-day routine — assuming those sessions go well, of course. The right-hander may need to open the 2025 season on the injured list, but it’s obviously a positive sign that he’s ready to face hitters.
