Cole Young went 1-for-2 with an RBI double as the Mariners eked out a 2-1 victory over the Padres in Cactus League competition on Friday evening in Arizona.

Young entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning where he grounded out to second base. He made an impact in the seventh though with a go-ahead RBI double that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. The M’s have talked about trying Young out at second base at some point in 2025 and if he keeps hitting like this he could push the issue sooner rather than later. He’s at least a name for those in deeper mixed leagues to keep an eye on.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Mariners could give Cole Young at look at second base “at some point next season.”

Rosenthal reported that the Mariners believe “they are positioned to handle second base internally with Dylan Moore and Ryan Bliss’ but Young could get a look at some point during the season. The 21-year-old played the entire season at Double-A this past year, slashing .271/.369/.390 with nine home runs, 23 steals, just a 15.8 percent strikeout rate, and a 12.1 percent walk rate. The 21st overall pick in the 2022 draft seems likely to start 2025 at Triple-A and could push for MLB at-bats with a strong start to the season.

Mariners prospect infielder Cole Young delivered a two-run double in the team’s 2-0 victory over the Reds on Monday.

The game was scoreless until Young deposited a pitch from Tyler Gilbert off the center field wall in the top of the eighth inning. Young, regarded as the Mariners’ top prospect, hit .277/.399/.449 with 11 homers and 22 steals over 126 games last season between Class A Modesto and High-A Everett. He has strong plate discipline and should hit near the top of the lineup when he reaches the majors.

Mariners agreed to terms with first-round pick INF Cole Young.

Young got a $3.3 million signing bonus, pretty much slot value ($3,292,900) for where he was drafted with the No. 21 overall selection last Sunday. The 18-year-old high school shortstop from Wexford, Pennsylvania had been committed to play college ball at Duke, but he is now officially in the Mariners' system. In fact, he's being introduced at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday night.
