2025 Player Outlook
Horwitz popped 12 home runs in 97 games last year with Toronto, slashing .265/.357/.433 in the process. Lefties gave him some fits last year, but he punished right-handed pitching to the tune of an .864 OPS, .199 ISO, and 147 wRC+. Pittsburgh will likely utilize him at first base more often than not, and he’ll operate on the large side of a platoon at the position. He has a good feel for the strike zone, and there’s not a lot of swing and miss in his game, which is a plus for this Pittsburgh offense and fantasy managers who play in leagues that value OBP. Horwitz is likely off the radar in mixed leagues, but in deeper NL-only setups, Horwitz could be a sneaky option when Pittsburgh faces a lot of RHP in a given week.

Pirates placed 1B Spencer Horwitz on the 10-day injured list after right wrist surgery.
This move is procedural since Horwitz has been out for weeks already. The 27-year-old was originally set to miss six to eight weeks and he has already been out for six. The Pirates have been quiet about his progress, but its possible that Horwitz may be headed to a rehab assignment soon.
Spencer Horwitz had the sutures removed from his surgically repaired right wrist.
Horwitz, who underwent surgery two weeks ago, is staying in shape by swinging a bat with his left hand and fielding grounders without making throws. He’s hoping to be ready for Opening Day, but we’re still a ways off from knowing if that’s realistic.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Andrew Destin and Noah Hiles report Spencer Horwitz is dealing with a right wrist injury.
Horwitz was trending towards being a popular late-round sleeper candidate for fantasy managers following an offseason trade to the Pirates where he projects to serve as their starting first baseman. The 27-year-old batted .265/.357/.433 with 12 homers in 381 plate appearances last year for the Blue Jays in his first extended opportunity in the majors. There should be some clarity on his Opening Day status and the exact nature of the injury from the Pirates in the coming days, but Destin and Hiles add that Horwitz will miss time this spring.
Pirates acquired 1B Spencer Horwitz from the Guardians for RHP Luis Ortiz, LHP Josh Hartle and LHP Michael Kennedy.
It’s been a busy day for Horwitz, who heads to Pittsburgh following his inclusion in a multi-player swap with the Guardians. The widely-held assumption here is that the Pirates have their first baseman of the future. The 27-year-old, who makes a ton of contact and boasts strong plate disciple as well, slashed .265/.357/.433 with 12 homers across 381 plate appearances in 97 contests last year for the Blue Jays in his first extended opportunity at the highest level. Given the lack of quality options at the cold corner for fantasy purposes, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were borderline mixed league-relevant next season playing everyday for the Pirates.
