Reds SS prospect Edwin Arroyo underwent season-ending left shoulder surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn labrum.
It’s pretty much the worst-case scenario outcome after Arroyo suffered a left shoulder injury earlier this month just prior to the Spring Breakout showcase. The 20-year-old shortstop was likely to open the year at Double-A Chattanooga, but will instead spend the next few months rehabbing from surgery.
Reds SS prospect Edwin Arroyo will undergo an MRI on his left shoulder.
Arroyo was lifted from Wednesday’s spring training contest after suffering a left shoulder injury during a pickoff play. There should be an update on the top prospect’s status in the coming days. The 20-year-old shortstop will open the season in the upper minors, most likely at Double-A Chattanooga.
Reds prospect infielder Edwin Arroyo is not in Thursday’s Spring Breakout lineup.
Arroyo left Wednesday’s game after falling on his arm/shoulder on a slide back into first base. It sounds like the Reds are just playing it safe with the 20-year-old, who appears likely to begin the year in Double-A.
Reds reassigned SS Edwin Arroyo, RHPs Rhett Lowder, Chase Petty, Julian Aguiar, Zach Maxwell, LHPs Reiver Sanmartin and Jacob Heatherly, Cs Mat Nelson, Michael Trautwein and Daniel Vellojín, INF Tyler Callihan and OF Blake Dunn to minor league camp.
No surprises here, but Arroyo, Lowder and Petty are the big-name prospects here. Lowder was Cincinnati’s first-round pick last summer and figures to move quickly after a standout collegiate career. Petty throws extremely hard and is just beginning to harness his formidable arsenal. He might be the first to arrive in the big leagues out of that trio.
