Luis Ortiz was outstanding in a victory over the Marlins on Friday night, allowing just one run on seven hits over his eight innings of work.
The right-hander struck out five on the night while issuing two walks in the ballgame. He actually exited the game after eight innings with a 1-0 deficit, but the Pirates rallied in the ninth to put him in line for the victory. The lone tally against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Jesus Sanchez in the opening inning. After that, he was brilliant. Ortiz got 12 swings and misses on 97 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 28 percent. He'll look to further improve upon his 3.74 ERA and 1.62 WHIP when he takes on the Padres at home on Thursday.
Luis Ortiz yielded one run in 4 2/3 innings against the Brewers on Sunday.
Ortiz got through four scoreless before giving up a double and an RBI single in the fifth. He struck out six, matching his season high. There's plenty of talent here, but until he starts working a little deeper into games, there isn't much reason for him to be rostered in mixed leagues.
Luis Ortiz allowed four runs on six hits in a loss to the Cubs on Tuesday.
He struck out four. Most of the damage came in the first inning after Ian Happ cranked a 393-foot bomb to right field, giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. His velocity on his slider was down a tick, and he still managed six swinging strikes on 43 thrown. What is more worrisome is he didn't get a single swinging strike on his four-seam fastball or sinker. Yikes. He will look for better results when he faces the Brewers at home on Sunday.
Luis Ortiz pitched five innings and allowed two runs in relief Wednesday against the A's.
Ortiz was available because his last start Saturday ended after just two innings due to a rain delay. That he threw 91 pitches today will push back his next start, which had been scheduled for Friday, but it's not an issue for the Pirates, who have both Thursday and next Monday off.
