Tigers placed RHP Beau Brieske on the 15-day injured list with right ankle inflammation.
Brieske is a key cog in the Tigers’ bullpen, but they’ll be without him for the rest of April. The good news is this is not an arm injury, so there’s a good chance he’ll be back in May if there are no setbacks.
Beau Brieske blew a save while allowing four runs and recording just one out against the Dodgers on Friday in the 10th inning.
Beau Brieske surrendered three runs in two-thirds of an inning to take a loss in Monday’s bullpen game against the Giants.
Brieske gave up three hits and a walk to the six batters he faced. Failing to take advantage of Jason Foley’s mediocrity, Brieske concludes the spring having allowed seven runs in 7 2/3 innings. The Tigers pen figures to be wide open initially, with Foley, Brieske, Tyler Holton and Will Vest all in the mix for saves. We like Brieske best, but he’s guaranteed nothing.
Beau Brieske surrendered three runs in an inning Wednesday against the Phillies.
Hopefully, the Tigers won’t read much into this one. Brieske was pitching the ninth inning of a 17-4 game that started after an 82-minute delay. The results were bad, but the runs all scored on a 349-foot homer that would have left four major league ballparks, according to Statcast. Brieske is battling for the closer’s role in Detroit, or at least the lead role in however A.J. Hinch wants to mix and match. He’s our favorite pick among Tigers relievers.
