Guardians optioned OF Will Brennan and RHP Andrew Walters to Triple-A Columbus.
Brennan’s shot at making Cleveland’s season-opening roster evaporated last weekend when the club swung a trade with the Rockies to bring back corner outfielder Nolan Jones. He’ll open the regular season back in the minors, but should be the Guardians first call when injuries strike at the highest level.
Will Brennan hit his first two homers of the spring to power the Guardians past the Mariners 8-7 on Friday.
He delivered two-run blasts off Gabe Speier in the sixth and Collin Snider in the eighth. Brennan is 8-for-28 this spring as he attempts to make the Guardians as their right fielder against right-handed pitchers. He hasn’t shown much upside in that role, but it’s still quite possible he’ll outperform Jhonkensy Noel versus righties. We’d rather see Noel get a look as the full-time guy initially, but he’ll at least play versus lefties.
Will Brennan is not in the starting lineup for the Guardians on Monday.
Breanna has started three straight games since being recalled, going 5-for-12 with one run scored and one RBI. However, with the Cubs throwing left-hander Shota Imanaga, the Guardians will go with their platoon lineup, which means Jhonkensy Noel will play right field, Tyler Freeman will play shortstop and both Brennan and Brayan Rocchio will head to the bench.
Guardians recalled OF Will Brennan from Triple-A Columbus.
Brennan went 13-for-31 with a homer and four steals in eight Triple-A games, earning him a quick return to the majors. He’ll likely start against most righties going forward, giving him value in AL-only leagues.
