Cardinals optioned RHP Michael McGreevy to Triple-A Memphis.
McGreevy heads back to Triple-A after throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to win the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Mets. He’ll rejoin the rotation at Memphis, where he already has a 4.08 ERA in six starts this year.
Michael McGreevy picked up a victory out of the Cardinals’ bullpen on Sunday night, allowing just one hit and one walk over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.
McGreevy struck out five batters during the impressive performance. He came on to put out a fire with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning and he responded by striking out Mark Vientos and getting Brandon Nimmo to line out to right to get out of it. He then went on to shut the Mets down over the next five innings to escape with a one-run victory. McGreevy got nine whiffs on 80 pitches in the game, posting a CSW of 29 percent. With the Cardinals utilizing a six-man rotation at the moment, it’s going to be difficult for them to justify keeping McGreevy out of there much longer. He’s worth a speculative look in deeper mixed leagues.
Cardinals recalled RHP Michael McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis.
McGreevy made four appearances (three starts) last year for the Cardinals in his first exposure to the big leagues. The 24-year-old righty has scuffled this season at the Triple-A level, compiling a lackluster 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 25/7 K/BB ratio across 28 2/3 innings (six starts). He’s presumably up with St. Louis as emergency long relief depth moving forward.
Cardinals RHP prospect Michael McGreevy allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings for Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.
McGreevy struck out four and walked three on the day and is now sporting a 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 25/7 K/BB ratio in 28 2/3 innings this season. The right-hander almost won a rotation spot out of spring training, and the Cardinals’ starting pitching has really struggled of late, so there is a window for him to push his way into the big league rotation. However, he’s going to have to pitch a little better to force St. Louis’ hand.
